Vue of San Francisco from the Clay Street Hill

Tracing the Truth aims to be the “landing pad” of all things related to writing biography and history that are currently swirling about in my brain. You’ll find book reviews, articles about the craft of writing, discussions of San Francisco culture and current happenings, my musings on the nature of research and historical articles about local personages and places.

The background image is Vue of San Francisco from the Clay Street Hill by Isador Laurent Deroy (1797-1886). A prolific Parisian lithographer, Deroy’s work appeared in the Paris Salon for forty years, and in the galleries of the Duchesse de Berry and Duke of Orleans. Vue of San Francisco is number 64 in Ports de Mer d’Amerique , an album of lithographs published in Paris in 1860.

This image comes from the Library of Congress’ stunning online collection of historic maps, photographs, and images. If you have a historical bent, please do not ignore this trove.
